The Ponton 220 SE is a Mercedes-Benz car built between July 1953 and October 1962. The literal translation of Ponton from German was a type of boat with a spiral bottom suitable for navigating shallow rivers. What does this have to do with the car? It is because the Ponton 220 SE was one of the first cars from Mercedes to be equipped with a completely flat chassis floor. Other fundamental properties of the Ponton models were the monocoque bodywork with integrated fenders in the body of the car, instead of being separate like pre-war cars. It was inaugurated at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1954.
