The "Speedster" is a version of the famous "356" series cars that Porsche produced continuously from 1948 to 1966. In fact, the speedster keeps the same characteristic design of all the 356, but with functional improvements. The "convertible" models of the 356 have been produced since the early 50s and were going to make up 50% of total production. The "speedster", introduced into the market in late 1954 and imported for the first time to the United States by Max Hoffman (the only US importer of Porsche), is today one of the most admired and most sought after cars by collectors. The name was born from the merger of the words “speed” and “roadster”. The goal for this project was to produce an “economic” Porsche that could reach the hands of many enthusiasts. The maximum price set by Hoffmann in the US was ‘only’ $ 3,000. In regards to the series of the car the windshield was the most changed; more tilted and lower by almost 10 cm compared to that of the convertible version, which allowed the use of a canvas canopy to be more simple and economic. The chrome strip on the sides gave it extra momentum. The ‘economic’ policy also led to the alteration of the inside, which had simpler seats without the folding backrest. The dashboard was without a drawer and instead of crystal side panels the windows were plastic panels, which greatly reduced visibility. Despite Ferry Porsche’s skepticism towards the idea of marketing an “economic” car, the 356 found favor with the pubic both for its charm, due to the unusual shape, as its excellent relationship between quality and price.
The Porsche 356 is a unique, exclusive car with rare beauty and originality. It is now one of the most expensive and sought out cars by collectors. The features of this unusual line have made it one of Porsche's most admired and appreciated cars.
