A revolutionary car ...

BMW Isetta

The BMW Isetta is one of the first mass produced low fuel consumption cars in the world. The first prototype was built in 1952 by Renzo Rivolta under the brand of Iso Autoveicoli Spa and presented to the press the following year. Renzo Rivolta’s design philosophy was to prioritize the comfort of the passengers, as well as to achieve efficient arrangements of the mechanics inside the car. Only later would the bodywork be designed around the body of the car. Initially designed to have only three wheels, one in front and two in the back, a fourth was quickly added because of the danger the car posed in case of a wheel puncture. The car was revolutionary at the time, with its ‘egg’ body and the front door. The public’s response, however, did not meet expectations. The Isetta struggled greatly in the commercial environment, so much so that in 1954 Renzo decided to sell the project to BMW. The following year, the Bavarian manufacture introduced the restyled Isetta, which had been renamed BMW 250. There were no radical changes made to the car, other than a new cooling rack, a new design for the side window, the implementation of a heating system, and four stroke single cylinder. Contrary to the Italian market, the BMW 250 found some success in Germany, so it remained in production until 1962, surpassing 160,000 units.
